Morganite is a pink to orange variety of Beryl, a group of minerals that also includes Emerald and Aquamarine.  In 1910 miners in Madagascar made the discovery of a new mineral, "Rose Beryl".  Following it's discovery American Gemologist George Kunz suggested naming this new gemstone after his friend and fellow gemstone enthusiast, J.P Morgan; famous American Banker.  In recent years, Morganite has grown in popularity for use in Engagement/Wedding Rings.
