The Labrys Axe is a double-headed axe that played a significant role in the Bronze Era Minoan civilization.  The Minoan civilization lived on the island of Crete in Greece during the 27th and 15th century BCE.  The spiritually and religious practices within their ancient culture is not fully understood, however it is believed that it centered around a Goddess deity.  The Labrys Axe was more than likely not a weapon, but actually used as a ritualistic axe associated with their Female Deity.  In modern times it has been adopted as symbols of female and lesbian empowerment.
