Abalone Shell

The abalone shell was traditionally used in smudging ceremonies to represent the element of Water.  They have been uncovered in archaeological digs from around the world dating back thousands of years.  

The iridescent nacre inside the shell is formed from microscopic calcium carbonate tiles, making it exceptionally strong in addition to it's beauty.  This distinctive rainbow shine is also frequently seen in jewelry. 

Commonly used today as a fire safe container while smoke cleansing or to represent the ocean or feminine on an altar.
